Introduction

“Fillers vs Botox. Which one is suitable for me? Or both?”

This is a frequent question asked by my lovely patients such as :

“Doctor, which is better, fillers or Botox ?”

“Doctor, I saw my friend do Botox or Filler, I want to do too, can I do the same?”

First of all, let me share with you the differences between fillers and botulinum toxin (Botox). Then, you can decide what is best for you.

What Are Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable implants approved by FDA to add on volume, soften lines and wrinkles on the face. The ingredients include Hyaluronic Acid (HA) – which is most commonly used, Calcium Hydroxyapatite, Poly-L- Lactic acid, etc. Starting from age of 25, our collagen production will gradually reduce ,cause sagginess of the skin and loss of volume in the face (Yes, I know aging sucks!)

So, how do you know if fillers is appropriate for you?

or

Firstly, ask yourself these questions :

  1. Do you look tired or haggard?
  2. Do you feel like there’s loss of volume over the face eg : cheeks, under eye, temples?
  3. Do you have a small receded chin or double chin?
  4. Do you want to have better jawline? Sexier pouty lips?
  5. Do you have asymmetry of the face?

If yes, you do feel that you have these questions lingering in your head then fillers might be the answer

How Fillers Able to Help You?

1. Restore or fill up the sunken area on the face (Restoration)

If you think you look tired or haggard, this may be what you need ! As collagen production is less than the collagen loss in the skin, certain area of the face might appear to be sunken such as cheeks, under eyes, temples, and buccal area, in which might make us look tired and haggard.

2. Enhance features on the face (Enhancement)

Do you have thin lips and wish to improve on it? Dermal fillers are able to help sculpt these areas such as lips to make it more voluptuous, contour the jawline and chin to make your features more defined.

3. Asymmetry corrector (Correction)

Do you feel that one side of the face is bigger or one side of the face is more squarish as compared to another side? Fillers are able to improve these asymmetry by improving the volume and definition of the asymmetrical side.

Do you feel like your skin start sagging and you look older? Well, dermal fillers are also able to create a lifting effect on the face, restoring your youthful features.

What is Botox?

So now that you know how fillers work, how can Botox help you?

Again, ask yourself these questions :

  1. Do you have want to get rid of wrinkles on your face?
  2. Do you suffer from excessive sweating?
  3. Do you suffer from teeth grinding?
  4. Do you have muscle aches / hypertrophied muscles?

How Botox Able to Help You?

1. Decrease or remove dynamic wrinkles / lines

The key here is dynamic wrinkles, in which will only appear whenever there is movement such as – horizontal lines on the forehead, the “11” sign between the eyebrows, the crow’s feet around the eyes.

2. Reducing muscle bulk

If you are looking to for a less squarish jaw or smaller appearance of the face, then you can consider this as well. One of my favorite treatment is administering Botox to the masseter ( chewing) muscles. It can indirectly help to reduce teeth grinding issue. Talk about killing two birds with one stone !

On top of that, it can also be used to reduce other muscle bulk such as the shoulder bulk, calf muscle bulk etc.

3. Treatment for underarm sweating or Hyperhidrosis

We know hyperhidrosis can cause social anxiety and low self esteem as it might soak through your clothes, leaving a visible stain and make you uncomfortable. Well, Botox can also help to reduce your symptoms by blocking the chemical that activate the sweat glands and reduces by 82-87% sweat based on studies and can last around 4-8 months.

4. Relieve Chronic Headache

For patients suffering from chronic migraine headache, whereby despite all the oral medication have been used and still suffering from headache more than 15 days a month, we can also use Botox to relieve these symptoms.
